The Nordic power system is changing. Fast.

For a long time, the Nordic power system has been dominated by hydropower generation. Due to the flexibility provided by hydropower, the system has been well-balanced up to the real-time dispatch of electricity.

More recently, the power system has undergone significant changes in the energy mix. With increased integration of variable renewable energy sources, more flexibility is required on the energy system, especially as demand side participation in markets continues to rise. This creates a need to review the market design in order to suit various new assets in the system.

What you'll learn

This course takes a deeper look into recent developments affecting short-term markets in the Nordics and explains what it means for different market actors. Moving the market granularity from 60 min to 15 min means that actors are having to make faster decisions in an increasingly complex environment. The switch to automated manual frequency restoration reserves (mFRR) market clearing has led to newer market outcomes than the ones we were used to. Therefore, it is essential to understand the drivers behind these changes to know how to act. This course will focus primarily on intraday, energy balancing markets and their corresponding balancing capacity markets.

This training course will teach you how to:

• Understand the evolution of the Nordic power system and the role of hydropower and renewables

• Navigate short-term electricity markets, including intraday, balancing, and capacity markets

• Adapt to structural changes, such as the shift from 60-minute to 15-minute market intervals

Ph.D. in Energy Markets from KTH Royal Institute of Technology

Priyanka works as a Nordic market expert at Montel Analytics where she is working on developing and enhancing efficient decision-making tools for energy market participants.

Her major focus is on short-term energy markets including ancillary services, day-ahead, intraday, and balancing markets. She is also involved in outreach and customer interactions. She completed her Ph.D. in energy markets at the KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden in February 2023. Her Ph.D. work involved modelling the continuous intraday market through an agent-based modelling framework to understand the implications of regulatory changes on the market outcomes as well as optimal trading strategies.

Her research work has been recognised through several Swedish and European awards. Since then, she has worked in different advisory roles in the Nordic energy markets, working with both renewable power producers and energy storage owners, before joining Montel.
