Trading French balancing markets in 2026

A 45-minute in-depth session on how France's integration into the European balancing platforms is reshaping short-term power trading.

France's balancing landscape has shifted twice in 18 months. PICASSO brought cross-border activation of aFRR. MARI has just connected France to the European mFRR platform. Both are already reshaping imbalance prices, and the full effect is only starting to show in the data.

The first MARI activations have already produced striking results. Cross-border mFRR volumes are clearing at very different prices to France's domestic mécanisme d'ajustement, with downward activations seen around minus 285 EUR per MWh while specific mFRR sat between zero and minus 50 EUR per MWh. With marginal pricing now applied to MARI volumes alongside aFRR, imbalance prices are set to swing harder in both directions.

In this session, Clement Bouilloux unpacks what has happened, why it matters, and what to do about it. You will get a clear view of how the two platforms interact, what the early activation data is telling us, and how to read the new signals on your trading screens. Clement will walk through real examples from recent sessions and show how to track the indicators that matter most for the rest of 2026.

What you will learn

  • How PICASSO and MARI have changed French balancing prices in practice

  • How marginal pricing of MARI volumes is widening imbalance price swings

  • Where the opportunities and risks sit in 2026
