Price spikes explained: weather and market perspectives

Join Montel and Meteomatics on 3 November 2026 as we bring market and weather data together to explain German price spikes, negative prices and the risks for winter.
Price spikes explained: weather and market perspectives

How weather affects Germany’s short-term power markets

Wind drops, solar output swings, and German day-ahead prices move with them sometimes into negative territory, sometimes into spikes. In this session, Montel's market data meets Meteomatics' weather data on the same set of real trading days from 2026, so you see exactly which weather pattern produced which price move.

What we will cover

We will pick a handful of representative German trading days wind and PV events behind both positive and negative price spikes and walk through each one from both sides: Vincent (Market Expert, Montel) on what happened in the market, Markus (Weather Innovation Expert, Meteomatics) on what the weather models showed at the time.

Then Joachim, Senior Meteorologist at Meteomatics, looks ahead: is another Dunkelflaute period forming this winter, and are stagnant weather patterns becoming more frequent in Germany's supply mix?

We'll close with live Q&A — bring your own price-spike days if you want a second opinion on what drove them.
