How grid constraints shape battery revenues and what the data really shows

In this session, we move beyond assumptions and test what is actually happening in the data.

Webinar overview

Battery storage value is driven by more than price spreads alone. Given the lack of available grid connections, growing instances of curtailment, and discussions around grid fees or ramp rates for storage, determining how and where value is captured is more complicated than ever before.

In this session, we move beyond assumptions and test what is actually happening in the data.

By running Montel’s own price projections through our battery storage analytics tools, including FlexInsight, we can analyse how changes to when and how much a BESS can charge/discharge will impact battery revenue streams across the value stack. FlexInsight is a new tool within Montel’s BESS analytics offering which allows you to experiment with different parameters in order to quantify the impact of different curtailment patterns.

We also show how optimisation outcomes vary depending on asset size, market share, and growing competition among BESS.

This is a practical, data-led session designed to help you understand where revenues are created, where they are constrained, and how to reflect this in your own modelling and trading strategies.

What you will learn

  • How grid constraints influence battery revenues across short-term markets

  • Why optimisation differs between small and large-scale BESS assets

  • How balancing market dynamics and system state changes affect revenue capture

  • How to test revenue assumptions using real market data

  • How FlexInsight supports battery optimisation within Montel’s BESS analytics tools

Who should attend

This session is designed for:

  • Market analysts building or validating battery revenue models

  • Traders and portfolio managers active in intraday and balancing markets

  • Asset owners and developers evaluating BESS performance

  • Flexibility and storage specialists working with revenue optimisation

This aligns strongly with market-aware analysts and portfolio managers who need structured, evidence-based insights to support decision-making

Why attend

If you are working with battery storage, understanding revenue is no longer just about forecasting prices. It is about understanding system behaviour, constraints, and how these impact your optimisation strategies in real conditions.

This webinar gives you a clear, data-backed view of how grid constraints shape battery revenues and how FlexInsight, as part of Montel’s BESS analytics toolkit, can help you turn that insight into better decisions.

Speakers

Ben Wrigley

BESS expert, Montel

Ben Wrigley is a Senior Energy Analyst at Montel. His work includes the gathering of inputs and supporting the modelling of long-term power market curves for the Benelux region. These curves are used in consultancy work to help customers develop business cases for flexible assets and to validate the work of others in this field. He has a Master’s degree in Economic Policy.

Sebastian Ligewie

BESS expert, Montel

Sebastian Ligewie studied Resource Efficiency Management (B.Sc.) at Pforzheim University, specialising in life cycle assessment and DIN/ISO-certified energy management systems. He expanded his academic base with a master's degree (M.Sc.) in Decentralised Energy Systems and Energy Efficiency from Reutlingen University. In his master's thesis, which was written in cooperation with Energy Brainpool, he specialised in aFRR price modelling and the development of a battery storage revenue model.

Sebastian Ligewie has been working at Montel Analytics since June 2024 in the field of battery storage revenue modelling and energy policy. His responsibilities include conducting specialist seminars on marketing in short-term and balancing energy markets as well as basic training in the electricity and energy industry.
