How Montel News supports transparent and risk-aware energy procurement

Procuring large volumes of energy for industrial and research sites requires more than price data alone. Market-moving news, political decisions and system events play a crucial role in timing and risk assessment. Martin Bernshausen, Head of Procurement at innexis, explains how Montel News helps him stay informed, contextualise price movements and make transparent procurement decisions.

Who are you and what does your business do?

My name is Martin Bernshausen. I have been with the group for 28 years and am Head of Procurement at the innexis, an owner and operator of biotech and life science campuses across Germany and Austria.

Our largest subsidiary, the Behringwerke in Marburg, has a history of more than 100 years. We operate multi-tenant research and production sites where pharmaceutical and biotech companies can fully focus on their core business. Innexis provides the complete infrastructure – including utilities, technical services and energy supply.

I am responsible for procuring electricity and gas for all innexis sites in Germany and Austria. This means ensuring security of supply while managing procurement risks and costs in a highly dynamic market environment.

What challenges did innexis face before using Montel?

In energy procurement, timing is critical. Even small changes in market conditions can have a significant financial impact. Before using Montel News, relevant information was often fragmented: price signals came from one source, while political developments, outages or cross-border flows had to be tracked separately.

Without a consolidated news source, it was difficult to quickly understand why prices were moving and whether a change was driven by fundamentals, geopolitics or short-term market events. For procurement decisions that need to be transparent and defensible, this lack of context was a real challenge.

What made you choose Montel News?

What convinced me was the combination of speed, relevance and clarity. Montel News delivers market-moving information in real time and focuses exactly on the topics that matter for energy procurement.

Instead of scanning multiple sources, I get a structured overview of political decisions, maintenance outages, system constraints and energy flows across Europe – all in one place. This allows me to assess market developments quickly and understand the drivers behind price movements.

How does Montel News support your day-to-day work?

Montel News is now an integral part of my daily workflow. When prices move, the news gives me immediate context: What happened? Is it a short-term event or a structural shift?

This is particularly important when making purchasing decisions together with our technical operations team. We can discuss market developments live, align on the background behind price movements and decide whether a specific situation represents a risk – or an opportunity.

Montel News helps turn raw market movements into informed decisions.

How has Montel news improved your work?

Previously, gathering and validating information took time. Today, I can make decisions faster and with greater confidence because the relevant context is immediately available.

This improves transparency internally as well. I can clearly explain why a procurement decision was taken at a specific moment, based on concrete market events and developments. That traceability is essential when reporting to management and planning future tenders.

What do you value most about working with Montel?

First, the reliability and relevance of the news coverage. Montel News consistently focuses on what truly moves energy markets.

Second, the collaboration with the Montel team. Communication is straightforward, responsive and solution-oriented. It feels like working with a partner who understands the realities of energy procurement, not just a news provider.

For me, Montel News is a critical tool for risk-aware, transparent procurement decisions.

Stay informed about market-moving events and make confident energy procurement decisions.
