Who are you and what does your business do?

My name is Caspar Ruane, and I’m Head of Asset Management for AMP Clean Energy’s Grid Flexibility Business. We operate in two core areas: heat decarbonisation and grid flexibility. We manage c. 300MW of distributed energy assets, including 160MW of small-scale gas generators, the UK’s first e-boiler, and a growing portfolio of battery storage systems.

Currently, five team members across asset management and operations use Montel regularly. Our goal is to integrate operations teams more closely with market dynamics by giving them direct access to demand and price data.

What challenges did you face before using Montel?

When we began our gas portfolio in 2020, our priority was the technical setup and ensuring availability. But as our asset base grew and operations stabilised, it became essential to gain commercial visibility. Without reliable market data, we couldn’t independently validate market signals, optimise our trading strategy, or schedule maintenance effectively. Once the fundamentals were in place, we needed a much sharper commercial understanding to unlock the full value of our portfolio.

How does Montel Analytics offer something unique to your trading operations?

We use Montel in three main ways. First, we rely on the short-term AI price forecast to guide maintenance scheduling, ensuring we plan downtime when assets are likely out-of-the-money. Second, we use Montel’s index data to cross-check market prices for settlement validation. Third, we use the same data for bespoke analysis, such as back-testing price simulations and evaluating opportunities in the forward market.
This combination gives us a daily view of market dynamics and helps ensure every trading or operational decision is based on reliable, timely data.
