Anyone who trades on the power market can earn a lot of money - or lose it. This interactive simulation game lets you take on the role of a trader and learn how to how to optimise spot market revenues for your power plant. Practice selling power plant capacities for a CCGT plant in short-term power markets and gain valuable experience in a fun way.

Agenda:

Session 1: Introduction to the German energy market

  • Overview of the structure of the German energy system

  • Introduction to the German electricity market and traded products

  • A look at the processes on a trading day

Session 2: Introduction to the simulation game and exercises

  • Explanation of the game, the processes and the user interface

  • Clarification of professional and technical questions about the game

  • Step-by-step instructions of a spot market game scenario

  • Exercises on buying and selling electricity on the continuous intraday market

Session 3: Game round - Trading in the German spot market

  • Selling electricity from a CCGT power plant on the spot market (day-ahead, intraday)

  • Playing several scenarios

  • Discussion and evaluation

Juri Schwartz

Analyst

Juri Schwartz holds a B.A. in International Studies from Leiden University and Master’s degree in Energy Policy Studies from Masaryk University in Brno. In his Master's thesis, he dealt with the introduction and design of Carbon Contracts for Difference in Germany as a tool to further the decarbonisation of hard-to-abate sectors and stimulating hydrogen demand. Alongside an apprenticeship, Juri has also completed several internships in both the private and public sector. Since September 2023, he has been working at Energy Brainpool GmbH & Co. KG, now part of Montel. In addition to conducting training courses and simulation games, Juri enjoys discussing all topics that fall within the scope of energy policy.
